By profession Abid Moiz is a neurosurgeon working in Saudi Arabia for more than a decade. Alternatively, he is an established expatriate humorous writer in Urdu. He belongs to Hyderabad India, a place well known for its cultural heritage. He started writing humorous creative essays in 80s and after continuing efforts in his creative writing, he became an icon in the history of post modern Urdu humorous literature of present times. He has written a lot of humorous articles which has been published continuingly in “SHAGOOFA’ [Urdu] a symbolic high standard humorous monthly journal from Hyderabad India. The first collection of his humorous essays ‘Dog bitten’ [Sag Guzeeda ] was published in 1994 from India and had won appreciation form the lovers of humorous literature as well as by the critics. Recently the Urdu language Magazine ‘SHAGOOFA’ has published a special issue on the literary contribution of Abid Moiz, which includes a lot of articles, reviews, impressions, and analysis of his works. Through his humorous writings, Abid Moiz has created a soothing thrill in the humorous Urdu literature. These soothing thrills escort us towards such a spongy place of humor to which we were still ignorant. The humorous writings of Abid Moiz accede to pass us, through our individual cults and go to the collective values. It promotes a true and practical sense of humor in ourselves, and makes us bold to face the individual and collective suppressions. His writings unintentionally awake us against emotional and psychological disorders. It helps us to face each happenings and situations which lead our life to bitterness. An effort to prevent and remove the bitterness of life is the main creative stimulant of Abid Moiz. That is why we find a certain objective style of humor in his writings. His humors are not a partime rather than a fulltime job. Beyond the boundaries of time and place Abid Moiz has tried to widen the circle of humor to the common, and has adopted such a style that it takes out our sadness and forms new relations with the life. It creates a determination and dynamism towards life. In my opinion Abid Moiz’s writings are precautions to the emotional disorders. Probing the sense of humor, setting it in a new order and displaying it in new shapes are the art of Abid Moiz. Due to this technique Abid Moiz is unintentionally keeping effect up on the humorous sense of his readers. Abid Moiz belongs to the literary generation which came in picture after 1980. This is the period when the ‘Progressive Writers Movement’ and the legacy of ‘Modernism’ were loosing their entity and credit in Urdu literature. So the literature was looking for its new ways. In such a situation Abid Moiz never bended over to any ‘Movement’ or ‘Ism’ rather than he always tried to explore his own thesis. Like a sensible humorous writer he is goal oriented, he always tries to boost our sense of humor, and show us such features of life which is always hidden from our eyes. In 80’s he positioned himself in resistance of his own culture, language and civilization. From 1980 to 1990 he has written such humorous pieces related to Hyderabad and its people that teach readers to love their home land and culture as well as it helps them to restore their dying cultural identity. The high standard light essays of his book ‘Oh! Hyderabad’ virtually defends the interests of ‘Hyderabad Deccan Civilization’. Abid Moiz looks successful in his defense. In his book he has drawn attention to lot of social and cultural problems of the ‘Hyderabad Deccan Civilization’. Through the publication of his book ‘Oh! Hyderabad’ he appears to be an open humorist and a hidden reformer. All the articles included in his book are valuable addition into the fortune of humorous literature and on the other hand it can be regarded as socio-historical record of the aforesaid Civilization. The book ‘Oh Hyderabad’ was firstly published in January 1994. In this book Abid Moiz has included 33 of his light-essays and humorous articles. Through a deep study of this book we find that no fraction of the ‘Hyderabad Deccan Culture’ is left untouched. The light-essays of this book ‘The city of four towers’ ‘City of rumors’ ‘ My beautiful City’ ‘Our roads’ ‘Footpath’ ‘Water taps of Hyderabad’ ‘Tea stalls’ ‘Our Clinics’ ‘Elections Season’ ‘Don’t blow’ ‘ And the curfew was lifted’ and ‘ Animal’s conference up on the communal war’ are victorious and successful. Abid Moiz has tried to minimize the tension of the common populace. Through this angle his writings lead us towards good adjustment to our social behavior. In his writings the metropolitan issues has covered the socio-economic factors. Whenever the writer writes some thing he tries to make our vision more adjustable to the society. As a result when we see the world through this vision we feel pleasure. The history of humorous writings in Urdu begins in early eighteenth century. Jafar Zatulli was the leader among the humorous writers of this age. The factual history of humorous literature in Urdu begins with the publication of the humorous newspaper ‘ Awwadh Punch’ from Lucknow [India] by Munshi Sajjad Hussain in the year of 1877, this was the time when the famous American humorist Mark Twain was engaged in writing his master pieces. After the independence of India the names which came to light as humorous writers in Urdu are Mirza Farhatullah Beig, Rasheed Ahmed Siddiqi, Shaukat Thanwi, Krishna Cahandra, Patras Bukhari, Dilawar Figar, Machis Lucknawi, Kanhaiya Lal Kapoor, Yusuf Nazim, Syed Mohammad Hasnain, Furqat Kakorvi, Mujtaba Husain, Narendra Luthar, Khaja Abdul Gahfoor, Ahmed Jamal Pasha, Mushtaque Ahmed Yusufi Fikr Taunswi, Raza Naqvi Wahi, and Asraar Jamai . After 1980, the important names in the history of humorous writings in prose in Urdu are Perwaizyadullah Mehdi, Maseeh Anjum, Dr.Rasheed Moosve, Shafiqa Farhat, Haleema Firdaus, Dr.Habee Zeya, Abid Moiz, Tamanna Muzaffarpuri, and Dr. Abbas Muttaqi. The name of Abid Moiz among the list of humorous writers after 1980 is of worth importance. He has added valued articles in Urdu literature. Besides arranging emotions he has used his writings as precautionary measures to the emotional and mental disorder. His writing can be used as treatment to mental illness and psychological deprivation. Readers seek confidence and strength in his writings. Abid Moiz is a regular columnist in ‘Urdu Magazine’ weekly published from Saudi Arabia. He throws light up on such invisible and hidden realities of life which are usually covered from common eyes. He never tries to use direct satire on his objects, rather than he makes himself the object of his own humor. This is called a kind of pure humor which never causes pain to anybody. So the approach of his writing always keeps positive effects on his readers. On the other hand this kind of pure humor never falls. It moves on its own legs. It survives on its own guts. Mark Twin the stalwart of the American humorous literature, who wrote his master-pieces “The adventures of Tom Sawyer’ and ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ in late nineteen century regards humor as a really effective weapon against harnesses, irritations, and resentments. He wrote: “The human race has only one really effective weapon, and that is Laughter. The moment it arises, all our harnesses yield, all our irritations and resentments slip away and a sunny spirit takes their place.” — Mark Twain I am of the mind that humor can improve the work quality and the mental health of a person as well as it can lead to more satisfaction. So the existence of a humorist writer is full of worthiness in modern times. I regard Abid Moiz as a crucial humorist of our age. #######
