Mary Theresa Eleanor Higgins was born in the Bronx on December 24, 1927. She was the only daughter of Irish immigrant, Luke Higgins and wife Nora. Her father died when Mary was only 11 years old. To help her struggling mother financially, Mary went to secretarial school after she graduated high school. She worked at an advertising agency for three years until she decided she wanted to travel. In 1949 Mary was a flight attendant for Pan American Airlines. Her run was Europe, Africa and Asia. She says, “I was in a revolution in Syria and on the last flight into Czechoslovakia before the Iron Curtain went down.” Of course, back then your were like starlets because Pan Pam was the air line to work for. After her marriage in1950 to her neighbor, Warren Clark, whom she had know since a teenager, Mary started writing short stories. She sold one of her first stories in 1956 for $100. Mary and Warren had five children together, but Warren died of a heart attack in 1964. Left raising the children on her own, Mary started writing patriotic radio scripts and books. The first book she wrote was, “Aspire to the Heavens.” In 2002, Meredith Press republished this book under a new title, “Mount Vernon Love Story.” Mary went back to college graduating summa cum laude with a BA in Philosophy at Fordham University at Lincoln Center in 1979. Later, asked why philosophy, she said that there is much psychology in philosophy, which helped her become a better writer. Today Mary has thirteen honorary doctorates. Mary does use much psychology in her novels. Asked about ESP, Mary says that she believes that all writers have an intuitive sense, “I firmly believe in ESP. Sometimes there is thought transference…” However, she does not believe in channelling or reincarnation. Mary Higgins Clark tackles many controversial subjects in her novels, such as fertility clinics, capital punishment, HMO’s, multiple personalities and parapsychology. However, Mary has never used explicit sex or violence in her books. Maybe that is why they appeal to the growing number of young adults reading her novels. Mary’s daughter, Carol Higgins Clark, also a suspense writer, has co-authored several books with her. In 1996, Mary married John Conheeney. John is the retired chairman and CEO of Merrill-Lynch Futures. They make Saddle River, New Jersey their home. Although Mary is known as “The Queen of Suspense,” she says that she still wants to write a book that is a generational saga. The global financial crunch sheds light on the significance of understanding what has happened in big financial institutions which collapsed and what we need to do to address defects in the thin-surfaced cosmetic arrangements of corporate governance and accountability. Obviously, the problems were not due to lack of corporate governance in these organizations, but how rather corporate governance framework has been used to mislead different stakeholders including the regulators. If something could be considered a teachable episode, it is the current financial crisis and how poor corporate governance helped to produce the shocking results. All key players, including top executives, regulators and investors, have much to learn from the global financial failures. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Steering group has recently issued a report entitled Corporate Governance Lessons from the Financial Crisis. This Report concludes that among major contributors to the financial crisis are failures and weaknesses in corporate governance arrangements. When they were put to a test, corporate governance routines did not serve their purpose to safeguard against excessive risk taking in a number of financial services institutions. Other key contributors to the global financial crises include failures in transparency, failures in lending standards; failures in prudential standards; failures in risk-management. As to the remuneration of top executives, the real problem was not the amount they receive; it is how companies pay them. The bad bonus culture encourages a short-term thinking: hit as many deals as you can this year and get a larger bonus! That approach pushed executives to focus their attention to achieving short term objectives at the expense of sustainable growth objectives. Most financial institutions link compensation to quarterly performance, encouraging short-term gambles. When the bets win, executives get the rewards, but when the bets sour, as they have in the latest financial crunch, the executives who took the risks do not have to return their fat-cat bonuses. The executives were, in most cases, no longer gambling with their own net worth. It was the shareholders who took the hit. Thus the executive greed acted as fuel thrown on the fires of and contributed to the blazing global financial crisis. The right approach if we are going to keep the financial system from being misused by top executives’ greed again is to maintain a partnership between the top executives and have their net worth tied to the organizations’ well-being. As a result, they would be cautious about taking big risks and discourage the malpractice of running after short terms gains. Also, we need to replace bonuses with better, longer-term compensation such as deferred cash pay and restricted stock. The directors of the troubled institutions appear to have provided only the thin-surfaced supervision to control the greed of top executives. The boards of the collapsed firms carry the full responsibility. Each month they see the numbers. They are also responsible for compliance with regulations. And they set the remunerations packages for the top executives. However the troubled firms just ticked the boxes for good corporate governance in their annual reports. In other words, there organizations presented an obvious example of the cosmetic corporate governance to fool different stockholders including investors, rating agencies and regulators! The current global financial crisis has shed light on how poor risk management could lead to catastrophic results. The risk management systems have failed in many cases due to corporate governance procedures rather than the inadequacy of computer models alone. With the advent of new products such as sophisticated derivates and certificate of deposits, they posed unknown risks. Risk management may not have been up to the task since many of the standard quantitative models and users of these models regularly misjudged the systematic nature of risks. To some extent this was due to product complexity and overreliance on quantitative analysis. Sadly, many risk evaluations were wrong including those provided by rating agencies. The directors of the collapsed financial institutions should have better understanding of the risk implication at the time of taking decisions related to sophisticated products such as derivatives. The reality is many board members had inadequate knowledge on the sophisticated new products and likely were embarrassed to show that they lack the adequate knowledge! Here where directors’ education and orientation fails as best corporate governance best practice. On going education is important to ensure that the directors are familiar with all aspects of the company’s affairs with a particular focus on risks. I’m going to start doing a post or two a week about celebrity tattoos. For some unknown reason the world seems to be overly obsessed with celebrities and people want to know everything about them and their tattoos are no different. Many people are curious to know what some of their favorite celebrities have tattoos of and what some of them might mean. Well I thought I would start with Penelope Cruz. I know she is a kind of random celebrity but I read this interview with her talking about her tattoo. Or should I say the lack of talking about her tattoo. Penelope seems to be very guarded about her tattoo and will not reveal the meaning or significance behind it. Which in all honesty she has every right to feel that way. But it is a little odd because most people like to share the story behind their tats. But if she wants to keep hers private than all power to her. Here is how the interview went, Is it true that you have 883 tattooed on your ankle? It is true, but I never say why. Is it an area code? No, and it’s not a Harley-Davidson. It’s not the different things that have been said. So everyone can have a theory? I don’t think anyone cares. It’s my own tattoo. And it’s your own ankle. Uh-huh.
How did creative writing begin? Don’t quote me on this, because it’s not gospel. Anyway, many years a go a little guy, let’s call him Tom, who was homeless and hopeless, spent his time wandering from ancient village to ancient village, trying to scrape a living by selling his labour. But times were hard and Alf found himself on the brink of starvation when he arrived at Betaville one day. The good folk of Betaville were in an uproar as they had heard of a terrible tragedy in Alphaville the previous week, but no-one knew the facts as no-one from Betaville had been to Alphaville for a while because it was a two day ride to Alphaville and Betaville’s only ass was off her feed. “But I’ve just come from Alphaville,” Tom cried. “Really?” the townsfolk said, “Tell us what happened.” “It was the blacksmith, old Fergus,” Tom said, “He was wild with drink and murdered two men and hurt a goat.” “Tragedy!” the townsfolk intoned and crowded round Tom for further details, which he was happy to supply. He talked long into the night and when he ended there were many offers of food, drink and a bed for the night. Tom was delighted. The next day Tom travelled on to Gammaville and immediately announced that there had been a great tragedy in Alphaville. “What,” said the remote inhabitants of Gammaville, “We never heard about that.” “It’s true,” Tom insisted, and retold the story as he had told it in Betaville. The residents of Gammaville were as entranced as their neighbours, and once again Tom was plied with hospitality. This is a bit of alright, Tom thought. The next day Tom moved on to Fourville, which was so named because my knowledge of Greek is rubbish. “Four men murdered in Alphaville,” he shouted, “A goat hurt and three virgins pregnant.” “Never,” said the residents of Fourville, and Tom knew he was in trouble because it was well known that there never ever were three virgins in Alphaville at any one time. “My mistake, “ he corrected himself, “Four men murdered, one goat hurt and three visiting virgins impregnated.” “Tell us more,” they cried and Tom took the fateful step from a purveyor of news to a fully fledged storyteller. “It happened like this …” Tom began and as the ale flowed, the tale of Fergus the blacksmith grew to encompass a pack of barbarians, a sheepdog called Corky, the eating of a haycart, and the three virgins had been transformed into an entire nunnery. But as he lay in his comfortable, and free, bed that night Tom worried that his memory not being what it was, it was more than likely that he would forget the true story and every version that derived from it. Best to write it down, he thought. Centuries passed and Tom’s work came to a cinema multiplex near you, which Tom had been paid millions of dollars to write down. Let’s start with a little scenario. You have what you consider to be a great idea for a nonfiction book. Your head is spinning with ideas, and you can hardly wait to get started. Perhaps you have made a list of the main points you want to cover or even begun to write. At first, the words just seem to flow onto the computer screen. You feel like a real author — until the moment you realize you are stuck. Suddenly, you don’t know if you’re on the right track, if your writing is coherent or rambling, or what you did with the wonderful few pages you just wrote, which you forgot to title. You need help. You need a book writing coach. So, you do a search on Google or Yahoo! or your favorite search engine and find the perfect person. She listens with interest. She understands your subject. She asks great questions, which clarify your thinking. She wins your confidence, and you agree to work together. “It’s a partnership,” she tells you. “We both have the same goal: to help you write the best book possible.” Your book coach spells out exactly what you can expect from her, which are all the things you know you need, plus a few you never thought of. Then, she tells you what she expects of you, as the author. In a partnership she explains, both parties have responsibilities. To get the most out your coaching relationship, here are the seven things a good client should do: 1. Make a full commitment to the book and to your working relationship. This is not a hobby you have undertaken. Writing a book and working with a professional assumes you are serious. Attempt to stay on the schedule and meet the deadlines you have agreed upon. A good coach will help you establish a realistic time table for completing each section of your book. Communicate as candidly as possible about concerns, ideas, doubts, changes in plans — in short, anything that is on your mind. One of the most important aspects of your relationship with your book coach is honest, open communication. Both of you must feel free to express yourselves in a safe, accepting environment. A good coach will create that environment. 4. Follow through on all promises and commitments you make. It may sound too obvious to mention, but it’s important. If you say you’ll do something, no matter how small, do it. You would expect that of your coach, and she should expect it of you. It’s called being accountable. 5. Consider all feedback, suggestions, and guidance your coach provides. Keep an open mind. You have hired this person for her experience and expertise. She brings a perspective to your book you don’t have, so hear her out. In the last analysis, however, this is your book; so, if you don’t agree with a suggestion, you don’t have to take it. 6. Be prepared for meetings whether they are in person or on the phone. If you had a meeting scheduled and your coach wasn’t ready, what would you think? These touch-base times are important to the process and serve to move the book along. The more effective the meeting, the better the work you will do when it’s over. 7. Accept encouragement, positive reinforcement, and sincere compliments. One of the things a good coach does best is cheerlead. She is 100 percent in your corner, through the smooth times and the not so smooth. Writing a book is a time-consuming process that requires a long attention span. When yours flags, your coach’s will hold steady, and her enthusiasm will re-inspire you. A book coach fills many roles — editor, guide, friend, and teacher, among them. But first and foremost, she is your partner in an endeavor that matters to you. It is a partnership you will come to value over the time.
